Privacy Policy
EvaLumina for Mac and for Windows, and EvaLumina Capture for iPhone
In short: EvaLumina collects no data. It has no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. Class lists, scanned answer sheets, grades and question banks stay on your computer. They never reach us.
Who is responsible
EvaLumina is developed by Diego Halabi ("we"). This policy explains what happens to the information you use in the app, on the Mac and on Windows. Where the two differ, it says so.
What we do not collect
We do not collect, receive, sell or share personal data or usage data. EvaLumina:
- does not ask you to create an account or sign in;
- contains no advertising, analytics or tracking, and no third-party code that does;
- does not use the camera, microphone, location or contacts;
- sends nothing of yours over the internet.
On the Mac, the app cannot connect to the internet at all: the macOS App Sandbox does not grant it that permission.
On Windows, the app has no code of its own that connects to the internet. The one connection is Windows' own: when the app checks whether EvaLumina Pro is yours, Windows asks the Microsoft Store (see "Purchases").
The information you work with in the app
To prepare and grade exams you may use your students' information in EvaLumina: names and identifiers from a course's class list, scanned answer sheets, answers and grades. You may also use question banks and their pictures, your institution's name and logo, and your settings.
That information is stored only on your computer:
- in the app's own folder: your courses and their class lists, the question banks and their pictures, the list of evaluations and your settings. On the Mac other apps cannot reach it. On Windows it is kept in your user account, where Windows may keep it apart for EvaLumina;
- in the folders you choose: each grading run's record, the results spreadsheets, the exam booklets and the answer keys, which are saved encrypted.
The app only opens the files and folders you select. If you keep those files in a service such as iCloud Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or a shared folder, that service's own terms apply.
As for your students' data, you and your institution decide how it is used and how long it is kept, under your own rules. We recommend protecting your computer with a password and encrypting its disk -- FileVault on the Mac, BitLocker or device encryption on Windows.
Purchases
EvaLumina Pro is bought through the App Store on the Mac and through the Microsoft Store on Windows. We do not receive your name, email address or payment details. The app only asks the store, through the operating system, whether the purchase is yours. Apple and Microsoft handle that information under their own privacy policies, and your purchase is kept in your Apple account or your Microsoft account under their terms.
Crash reports
On the Mac, if you choose to share analytics with app developers in macOS settings, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports. You can turn this off in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
On Windows, Windows may send information about the app's crashes and hangs to Microsoft, according to your diagnostic data settings, and Microsoft may make failure reports available to us. You can change what Windows sends in Settings → Privacy & security → Diagnostics & feedback.
On both, we use crash reports only to fix faults.
Deleting your information
- Deleting a course in the app deletes its class list.
- On the Mac, uninstalling EvaLumina makes macOS remove the app's own folder.
- On Windows, uninstalling EvaLumina may remove the app's own folder, with your courses, class lists and question banks. Export the question banks you want to keep before uninstalling.
- Files you saved to your own folders stay where you put them, and you can delete them at any time.
- Since we hold no copy of your information, there is nothing for us to delete on our side.
Children
EvaLumina is made for teachers. Students do not use the app, and we collect no information from anyone, children included.
EvaLumina Capture for iPhone
EvaLumina Capture follows the same rules: no accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking, and nothing of yours is sent over the internet. What is particular to the phone:
- The camera. The app uses the camera only to read answer sheets while you grade. Nothing is saved to Photos.
- What stays on the phone. The evaluations, their class lists, answer keys and grades, and a small image of each sheet taken, kept as a record in case a grade is questioned. They are stored in the app's own space, which iOS keeps encrypted and other apps cannot reach.
- Between the computer and the phone. An answer key or a class list reaches the phone, and a record goes back to the computer, only as a file you send yourself: by AirDrop, iCloud Drive, OneDrive, mail or any other app you choose. Those files can carry your students' names and identifiers, so send them only to your own devices. The service you use applies its own terms.
- Purchases. EvaLumina Capture is free and has no purchases.
- Deleting. Deleting an evaluation in the app deletes its class list, its grades and its sheets' images. Deleting the app deletes everything it kept.
- Crash reports. As on the Mac: if you choose to share analytics with app developers in the iPhone's settings, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports. You can turn this off in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
