Diego Halabi heads the Department of Dentistry at Universidad Austral de Chile. He researches chronobiology and metabolic physiology, and he writes the software his academic work runs on: assessment tools, reproducible-research platforms and the servers behind them.

“I've spent 12 years assessing large courses with multiple choice: used well, it measures applied knowledge, not just retention. I have zero tolerance for dishonesty, and from that pain I built EvaLumina with my own hands, for my own use, following the real flow of an exam in the classroom. AI was the easy temptation, but it hallucinates and processes students on external servers. That is why here everything happens on the professor's computer.”

How it grew

EvaLumina started as a tool for his own courses: a different form for every student, the scanned sheets graded without hours in front of them, and a way to know which questions were failing.

Then his colleagues wanted to use it. Each new course brought something that was missing, and the tool grew with them, until it became the app that is now on the App Store and the Microsoft Store, and very soon on the iPhone.
